The Chinese Science Class at the St. Louis Chinese Language School

St. Louis Chinese Language School and the Science Center are working together on a new class called the "Chinese Science”.

In their first class, children conducted a few experiments under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs. Tung. First, they succeeded in using just three ordinary index cards to support objects that weigh more than forty pounds! Then they observed the different sounds when objects of varying masses and texture crashed to the ground. But what interested these children the most, was the baby silkworms brought by Mrs. Tung. They learned that China is the land of silk. They also learned that the tiny creatures crawling in front of them were responsible for producing the silk. But how do these worms grow and make silk? The children will take the silkworms home and observe them with their own eye!

Mrs. Tung emphasized that this class is not designed to teach children scientific theories. Instead, the class tries to engage them in observing and experimenting and during the process, to help them ask questions and seek answers by themselves. According to Mrs. Tung, “Curiosity is the best teacher,” and “What we can do the best is to keep their curiosity and help them develop an interest toward all things scientifically.”
